The Results Are In!

Brandon and I got back from Chicago yesterday morning. We had a great week together and it was fun to spend more time in Chicago after visiting it this past December. But, before I post the million pictures I have from our trip, here are the photos from the Great Urban Race that I did with Allison.

I drove up to their place in the Cities on Friday night. They just bought a new town home so it was fun to see it. They are great hosts and had a robe along with a basket of toiletries waiting for me! Their place is really nice and Allison has done a great job decorating it. In the morning, Jared and Allison made me waffles and I felt so spoiled. Afterwards, we headed down to the start of the race which was at a neat brewery. We got their early so that we could get the internet working on my computer before the race. There were 162 teams of two competing and the race started at noon.
The breakfast that Allison and Jared made for me - I felt so spoiled!

As soon as they handed out the clues, Allison got on the phone with Jared (our master googler!) and I thought I would start searching things on the internet...however, just as luck would be, the internet would not work. I think too many people were on the same server at once! It turns out that Allison and Jared were AMAZING at figuring out the clues so I ran back to the car to drop of the heavy laptop before we headed out. Allison and Jared actually had all of the clues figured out pretty fast along with a route that we should do them in and we started off running while others were still figuring them out. We soon got tired and thought that we should have actually ran a few times before the race but we still did pretty well. At all of the clue stops, we were really quick and in between them, we ran as much as we could and then sped walked the rest. It was hard to run with backpacks on! We were about 5 clues into the race and were doing well when we realized we didn't have our clue sheet...we started back to the last clue stop to look for it when we came across another team and asked them if they had seen a sheet. Thankfully, they saw it on the ground in front of us and we didn't waste too much time!

We continued on with the clues while running and Allison talked to Jared, who helped us out tremendously, on the way. We only messed up once by going to a different park but other than that, we did pretty well. We came in 52nd out of 162 teams. However, the girls that we were near most of the race came in the top 25 so we think we could have done a little better had in not been for the wrong park and the search for our missing clue sheet...oh well! It was hard while we were doing it, but it was so much fun. It also gave us some ideas of how to go faster for next year so watch out for the team "We Walk As Fast As You Run" at next years race! Thanks Allison, Jared, Brandon and Janet for all of your help!!

The results being announced
My awesome partner - thanks Allison!

My parents wanted to know what the clues were so here they are. There were 12 clues and none of them were mandatory and you were able to skip one of them. We skipped #1 since you had to figure out what a bunch of symbols were first before being able to read the clue!

1. Assuming a=?, e=?, i=?, o=?, u=?, L=?, D=?, V=?, (the ? were actually different symbols) the third word is 'picture' and the 23rd word is Fargo, solve the riddle below and then do what it says. Note the subtle differences with the squares and diamonds.

2. Find the GUR staff in blue shirts in Elliot Park. Both teammates must take one apple and walk from the start cones to the finish cones balancing the apple on your heard. When finished, get this clue sheet stamped or you will not receive credit for completing this clue. This clue will only be availble from 12-1! Strategize accordingly!

3. Take a photo of both teammates in front of the real sculpture that's picture somewhere on www.greaturbanrace.com.

4. DETOUR (Chose one of the two below)
Return to the finish with a set of chopsticks (which we chose to do!)
Or...
Return to the finish with a one dollar bill with at least five sixes anywhere on it (writing sixes with any writing utensils will not be accepted).

5. Find Golooney's Pizza. When you arrive take one slice per team and take a photo of one teammate feeding the slice to the other teammate.

6. Take a picture of both teammates in front of the statue of a person mentioned in the Weezer song that his as high as #2 on the 1995 US Modern Rock tracks.

7. Take a picture of both teammates in front of the Smith Triangle sign holding up the proper amount of fingers that correlates to the number of benches within Smith Triangle (including any bench on the sidewalk). (this is the clue where we went to the wrong park at first!)

8. Unscramble the following two words and take a picture of both teammates in front of the name and address of this Tower.
AMPLLBCE IMUNTH

9. Mr. Jenkins is odd. He likes ballooons, but doesn't like parties! He likes books, but doesn't like reading! He likes weeds, but doesn't like flowers! He likes swimming, but doesn't like water! He likes letters, but doesn't like words! He likes Dr. Pepper, but doesn't like Coke! He likes noodles, but doesn't like pasta sauce! He likes berries and apples, but doesn't like plums! He likes coffee, but doesn't like tea!

According to what you learned in the riddle above, take a picture of both teammates in front of any street sign Mr. Jenkins likes. The street sign must be clearly visible and easy to read in the picture. (Allison figured this clue out in a second...she is smart!)

10. DETOUR (chose on of the two below)
Take a picture of 12 or more people total in front of a purple neon sign that says Orpheum.
Or...
Take a picture of four or more people total doing a cartwheel in front of a sign that says Candyland

11. Return to the finish mat with three tickets from GameWorks and take a picture of both teammates in front of the game Monkey Ball. No running is allowed in GameWorks - please be respectful! (I bought tickets from someone so that we didn't have to waste time playing a game!)

12. Find the GUR staff in the blue shirts somewhere in Loring Park. Then take one set of Buddy Walkers and walk, in sync, with your teammate from the start of the cones to the finish cones. Be careful - if you fall off, you must start over. Complete this clue like the children in the picture to the right. When finished, get this clue sheet stamped or you will not receive credit for completing this clue. This clue will only be available from 12:30-3:30! Strategize accordingly!

Those clues seem to be difficult. It would help if you were locals.
